Studying and working in Canada in 2025 will continue to be one of the most popular ways to come to Canada.
The educational offer in Canada is still very varied. There are many undergraduate and graduate educational institutions across the country. Canada is characterized by a high level of education, very cheap prices for studies in College and Universities (even cheaper than the United States or England), very good quality of life, safety, low unemployment, and most importantly, it offers many immigration facilities for international students, among other factors.

How to Study and Work in Canada?
First things first. Be sure to identify the requirements of each college or university. Most of them will ask for an intermediate or advanced level of English as an admission requirement.
In some other cases, they may ask for years of experience in the field (especially for graduate or master's degrees), or if you are interested in a design career they may ask for work/projects completed (portfolio).
If you don't have an intermediate level of English, you can come and study English! We'll talk about that below, read on.
At Alternativa Canada, we always recommend that you take into account how long the programs take, the city you want to go to, and your area of specialization.
If you want to Study and Work in Canada, you have 3 options. The different programs are as follows:
Higher Education: Studying a higher education program at a public university/college that issues provincially accredited degrees will allow you to work part-time during your studies (maximum 20 hours per week). Diplomas, Certificates from 1 to 2 years.
Short programs: Take a technical or vocational course in a College (public institution), with which you can work part-time (20 hours per week). If you have a Diploma or Certificate of at least 8 months you could also apply for the PGWP if your school or program is eligible. Diplomas, Certificates of 1 to 2 years.
Co-op Programs: Take a Co-op program at a College or University, in which work is incorporated as part of the studies and allows the student to have a paid (or unpaid) internship period related to the area of study. Its duration is between 1 and 2 years. It is basically an internship during your studies.
If your program is eligible for the Post Graduate Work Permit, you will be able to work at the end of your studies. In addition, during your vacation, you will be able to work full-time as in the Co-op period.
What is the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?
In short, it is a work permit that you can apply for once you finish your studies.
If you have finished your studies, but you want to stay longer in Canada, you can apply for the Post Graduation Work Permit. To apply for this permit, you must have studied in Canada for at least eight months in a PGWP-eligible program and eligible College, as this will determine the approval of the document and its validity, which can be up to three years.
If you study a 1-year Master's degree, you may be eligible for a PGWP of up to three years. There is an exception for Master's students, as previously, you were given the PGWP depending on the length of your program. Recently, IRCC changed the policies and now allows graduates of a Master's program, whether it is one-year program, to be eligible for a PGWP not for one year, but for up to 3 years.

What visa do I need to study and work in Canada in 2024?
To study and work in Canada you need to apply for a student visa.
A study visa gives you the ability to stay in Canada for more than six months and, as a student, you will have the option to work. If you are going on a program of less than six months, you may not need a student visa and will only need a tourist visa.
When you obtain your study visa, you will receive a Study Permit at the airport or point of entry. On this study permit you should note that it mentions that you may work on campus and off campus. As a student you will be able to work up to 20 hours per week and 40 hours per week during your vacation.
Some of the requirements to apply for this Canadian visa are:
Be enrolled in an official institution (DLI) and accredited by the Government of Canada.
To present a justification that demonstrates that you have the necessary funds to pay for your entire trip or a letter written by the person who will be in charge of your maintenance.
Submit a letter of acceptance issued by the school in Canada.
Attach three passport photos.
Pay the visa fee (156 $CAD approximate, price may vary).
What is a Visa and Study Permit?
A visa is a document or authorization mark placed in a passport that allows the holder to enter, stay in, or leave a country for a specific period of time. If you have traveled to other visa-required countries, you should be familiar with this term.
There are several types of visas: tourist, work, student, transit, etc. What you need is a student visa.
A Canadian study permit is an authorization that allows international students to study in Canada at a designated learning institution (DLI). This permit is required for those who plan to study in a program in Canada that lasts more than six months.
It is important to note that a study permit is not a visa, although it is often issued in conjunction with a visitor's visa or an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to allow entry into the country.
Here are some key aspects of the Canadian study permit:
Eligibility: To apply for a Canadian study permit, you must have been accepted by a DLI in Canada. DLIs are schools approved by a provincial or territorial government to receive international students.
Duration of Permit: Generally, the study permit is valid for the duration of the study program, plus additional time to prepare for departure from Canada or to apply for an extension of stay. If your program of study is extended, you must apply for a study permit extension.
Working Conditions: Students with a valid study permit may work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic terms and full-time during scheduled vacations, such as summer or winter.
Documents Required: To apply for a study permit, you will need the DLI acceptance letter, proof of identity (such as a passport), and proof of sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living expenses.
Online or Paper Application: Applicants can apply for a Canadian study permit online or through a paper form, although the online method is generally faster and more convenient. It is important to comply with all study permit requirements and conditions to maintain legal status in Canada and for any possible transition to a work permit or permanent residence in the future.

Where to study: Public or Private College? What about Universities?
Public Colleges: These programs require a higher investment, but they are more complete, more prestigious and have a higher educational level. In addition, at the end of your program you will be able to apply for a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Check if your institution is within the list of designated institutions (DLI) and grant the PGWP permit.
At Alternativa Canada, we only work with public colleges, because they grant the PGWP, which gives you a clear path to permanent residency.
Private Colleges: Generally much cheaper than Public Colleges. They are short programs, 1 to 2 years, but they do not give you the option to work after graduation; that is, you will have to return to your country or enroll in a Public College to continue your path to permanent residency.
Universities: We also work with several Universities to a lesser extent. The programs are usually longer (3 to 4 years) and are more expensive (starting at $35,000 CAD per year). The programs are generally what we know as "traditional" where you will learn about health, engineering, architecture, etc. and you will have a Bachelor's degree. This is also where they offer master's degrees.
